Hot tubs and spas are some of the best additions you can make to your home. They provide a place for you to relax after a long day of work and are great sources of entertainment for friends and family alike. If you’re not in the know, however, it’s easy to use these terms interchangeably, even though they refer to two separate things. Today, let’s go over the difference between a hot tub and a spa – that way, if you’re looking to add one or the other to your outdoor area, you’ll know exactly what to look for!
Hot Tub
A hot tub is a prefabricated unit that can be purchased and installed at your home wherever you have the space for it. They are freestanding and are above ground in a fashion similar to above-ground pools. All of the components for the hot tub – the plumbing, electrical systems, and more – are built into the housing for the unit. They are perfect for homeowners who may not have the space for a full-blown in-ground pool setup, since they are often less expensive than a spa. However, this convenience comes at a cost – hot tubs are not very customizable and you’ll get what you get when you purchase one. In addition, hot tubs tend to be less durable than spa systems. Regardless, a hot tub can be purchased and installed quickly, so you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits much sooner than a spa system.
Spa
If a hot tub is akin to an above-ground pool, then a spa is similar to an inground pool. In fact, the spa is typically built as an extension to an existing inground pool. It is a permanent addition, and since it is built from scratch it takes a lot more time and space to get one into your setup. However, the benefits are very much worth the trouble. The spa can be custom-designed to your specifications and outfitted with whatever features you’re looking for. You won’t be limited by what comes in a prefabricated unit like a hot tub. And they add aesthetic value to your outdoor area that can’t be replicated with a hot tub. It’s a great way to make swimming in the pool more enjoyable!
