Conserving water is a hot topic these days, so how can you go about saving water in your swimming pool?
Even though we’re only most of the way through April, May is seen as the start of summer. With less than a month before Memorial Day, you’re going to want to spend as much time in your pool as possible. But splashing around and having fun and can make the water splash out and it’ll eventually evaporate. Conserving water is a hot topic these days, so how can you go about saving water in your swimming pool?
Keep Water from Evaporating
Stopping all of the water from evaporating is impossible That’s because evaporation is a natural part of the planet’s water cycle. You can lose up to a quarter inch of water every day in warm weather, and warmer weather is well on its way. Try using solar pool covers or solar blankets. You can also experiment with liquid solar blankets if you prefer. Another option is to try using wind blocks to slow down the effects of wind – this may include planting hedges and building fences. Removing the water features in your yard may affect the curb appeal of your home, but it also helps conserve water since you won’t need to pump water to fountains and ponds and can reroute all of that extra water to your pool instead. If you have a heated pool, spa, or jacuzzi, turn down the temperature on the thermostat. Doing this can make more of a difference than you realize!
Prevent Backwash Loss
Another problem many pool owners face is backwash. However, they might not know what to do about it. Sand filters and DE filters help keep your water clean by clearing out dirt and making sure new water flows in at the appropriate times. However, they can use hundreds of gallons of water per day. Bump the filter to slow down its refresh rate, try a different filter cleaner, use robotic pool cleaners, and add separation tanks. These are not the same as septic tanks! Sometimes it can help if you use a larger filter or change the cartridges.
Finding and Repairing Leaks
Finally, you’ll want to find and repair all of the leaks in your pool. This goes a long way towards saving more water for your swimming pool. Check skimmers and returns. Then look at the lights and the drains. Cracks in the concrete or in the vinyl linings of the pools can also lead to leaks, so if you can’t find them, then it’s time to call in the professionals and have them come and take a look instead.
