While the most common exercise most people do in a swimming pool involves doing laps, that’s not the only thing you can do. For example, you can use pool noodles to get even more exercise done since it can provide some resistance for you while you’re underwater. Here’s a look at some of the other pool exercises you shouldn’t hesitate to try the next time you hop in the pool!
Using the Edge
The concrete edges of your pool can provide an excellent base for you. You might want to put down a towel or use a yoga mat to help stay comfortable, especially if the edge of the pool is hot after being in the sunshine all day. Pendulum swings, leg lifts, and flutter kicks are some of the moves you can start doing.
Pendulum swings work your legs and core muscles. Start by balancing on the edge of the pool and then press your legs together, pointing your feet down. Raise your right leg first, then switch to your left leg, like a pendulum in a grandfather clock moving back and forth.
For leg lifts, you will need to balance yourself against the edge while standing in the pool. Put your elbows at water level. Point both of your legs in front of you as you raise them to your waist and then lower them.
Finally, let’s focus on flutter kicks. Hold onto the wall and start flapping your legs like a butterfly fluttering its wings. By holding onto the edge, you won’t push yourself around the pool!
Toe Bouncing
As amazing as they are, the pendulum swings, leg lifts, and flutter kicks aren’t the only pool exercises you can perform without the aid of pool noodles. Try doing jumping jacks while you’re standing in the pool. This is exactly like doing it in your home gym, but the water will push back. Plus, it won’t hurt your joints as much despite the gentle pressure from the water. Then try running through the water and doing squat jumps, both of which will fire up your muscles without taking their toll on your joints, especially if you have back, elbow, neck, or knee pain.
Water Treading
Water treading is also useful. Try some sculling, where you tuck your knees to your chest and tread the water with your hands. Then pedal your legs like you’re riding a bicycle and feel the additional burn when you get your arms involved. This means you’ll be burning double the calories!
