As the vibrant days of summer begin to wind down and the crisp air of fall sets in, it’s time to start thinking about transitioning your pool from frequent use to off-season care. Properly preparing your pool for the fall season is essential to maintaining its condition, preventing damage, and ensuring that it remains clean and safe until the warm weather returns. We went over the beginning steps in a previous post and are now discussing the final steps in preparing your pool for the fall season.
Adjust Pool Equipment and Settings
As the temperatures drop, you’ll want to adjust your pool equipment and settings to reflect the reduced usage and cooler conditions. This includes reducing the run time of your pool pump and heater. Aim to run the pump for about 4 to 6 hours per day instead of the 8 to 12 hours typically recommended during the summer.
If your pool is equipped with a heater, lower the temperature setting or consider turning it off completely to save on energy costs. Be sure to also clean and inspect all equipment, such as the pump, filter, and heater, to ensure they’re in good working order before winter.
Use a Pool Cover
Investing in a quality pool cover is one of the best ways to protect your pool during the fall and winter months. A pool cover helps to keep leaves, debris, and dirt out of the water, reducing maintenance needs and keeping the water clean. There are different types of pool covers available, including mesh, solid, and automatic covers. Choose one that fits your pool type and climate needs.
Make sure the cover is securely fitted and properly anchored to prevent it from blowing away in strong winds. Regularly check the cover throughout the fall season to remove any accumulated debris and to ensure it remains intact.
Monitor Water Levels
During the fall, it’s important to keep an eye on your pool’s water level. Falling leaves and cooler temperatures can cause the water level to drop. If the water level falls below the skimmer line, the pump can run dry, potentially causing damage. Use a garden hose to add water if necessary, keeping the water level at the midpoint of the skimmer opening.
Conversely, heavy rain during the fall can cause the water level to rise too high, which can also cause issues with the skimmer and filtration system. Use a submersible pump or backwash the pool to lower the water level if needed.
Prepare for Pool Closing (If Applicable)
If you live in an area with freezing temperatures, you’ll need to take additional steps to winterize your pool. This includes fully draining the water from the pump, filter, heater, and other equipment, blowing out the plumbing lines to prevent freezing, and adding winterizing chemicals to the pool.
Consider hiring a professional to help with the winterization process if you’re unsure about the correct procedures. Properly closing your pool for the winter will protect it from freeze damage and make reopening it in the spring a much smoother process.
