Memorial Day is just around the corner, and with it comes pool season! Most public and community pools open on Memorial Day weekend, but you can always open yours a little bit earlier, especially since spring has been so warm this year. The earlier you open your pool, the sooner it’s ready for the season! If you’ve never opened a pool for summer before, read on. There are a few steps you need to follow to get your pool ready for the hot summer days ahead.
- Remove the cover – There are a few things you need to remember when taking your pool cover off. First, you should always drain any water on top of it and remove any debris. Check your cover to make sure that it survived the winter without any holes. Once you’ve assessed the cover, you should clean it, dry it, and store it safely for the summer.
- Do some double checks – Remove anything that you installed in the fall to keep your pool from freezing over as you don’t want these to remain in your pool through the summer. You should also double check that your filter is clean. Though it should have been thoroughly cleaned in the fall when you closed your pool, it’s best to check it just in case.
- Just add water! – Gimmicky, we know. But the next step is to fill your pool to its standard operating level. The sooner you do this, the warmer your water will be later on. Jumping in a pool before it’s had a chance to warm up at least a little bit can be miserable. You’ll need to make sure that your filter system is purged of water and working properly at this point. This can be difficult to do and if you don’t have a lot of experience with it, you may want to contact a professional.
- Prep the water – Remove any debris that may be left over from the previous season and check the chemical composition after 24 hours of letting the water circulate. At this point, you’ll need to add the proper chemicals for safe swimming. Make sure to follow directions for adding chemicals perfectly to avoid damaging the pool or making the water unfit for swimming.
- Add the finishing touches – Inspect any ladders, handrails, or diving boards going into your pool to make sure that they didn’t rust or corrode over winter. Put them all back in the pool so that people can safely get in and out. Consider adding car wax to the handrails and ladders to help prevent any corrosion.
Once you’ve done this, wait the instructed amount of time before getting back in the pool. Once it’s ready, dive on in and enjoy a nice, cool summer by the pool!
