If you love your hot tub or spa and you also love aromatherapy, you might be thinking about how amazing it would be to combine these two relaxing things for the ultimate relaxation experience. I have good news: it’s totally doable! However, there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. We’re going to go over how to safely enjoy aromatherapy in your hot tub or spa.
What is Aromatherapy?
The idea behind aromatherapy is simple. In most cases, you use a diffuser and essential oils to fill the air with your chosen scent. Different scents are meant to invoke different feelings and mental states. Some common scents include vanilla, which is great for when you’re getting ready to go to bed or when you just want to reduce your stress level. Eucalyptus is also a great scent for stress relief, and vanilla is another good option for winding down at bedtime. There are a ton of different scents available, with each of them serving various purposes. There are even seasonal scents to get you in the spirit of the holidays or invoke comforting memories.
Aromatherapy and essential oils became wildly popular several years ago, and many people now own essential oil diffusers and wax melters in order to utilize scents to help them ease their minds. Now just imagine combining the physical relaxation that a spa or hot tub provides and combining it with the mental relaxation aromatherapy provides—doesn’t it sound like paradise?
The Problem With Essential Oils
If you already own essential oils, you might be tempted to add some to your hot tub or spa. I cannot stress this enough—do not do this. Essential oils are not formulated to be added to your spa or hot tub, and they will leave behind an oily residue that will probably feel unpleasant on your skin. In addition, these oils are notorious for clogging the filtration equipment in spas and hot tubs, causing expensive damage that will not be helpful when you’re trying to engage in some good old stress relief.
The Right Products For the Job
You cannot safely add essential oils to your spa or hot tub, but that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to never enjoy aromatherapy when you’re relaxing in one of these great tubs. There are aromatherapy products that have been specially formulated to be used in spas and hot tubs—they come in the form of crystals or liquids. These should be labeled as being specifically for spas and hot tubs rather than for baths and showers. Baths and showers don’t have a sensitive filtration system to worry about, so aromatherapy crystals and liquids meant for these aren’t necessarily safe for your hot tub or spa. It’s always best to visit your local hot tub or spa retailer and purchase safe products directly from them.
