Get Ready for Spring: A Checklist for Opening Your Pool

Sunrise Premiere Pool Builders Checklist for Pool Opening

Utilize our handy checklist for opening your pool to ensure every step is complete before going for a swim.

As the weather warms up and the days get longer, it’s time to start thinking about opening your pool for the spring and summer seasons. After months of being closed, your pool will need some TLC to ensure it’s clean, safe, and ready for swimming. Follow this comprehensive checklist to make opening your pool a breeze!

Remove and Store Your Pool Cover

If you used a pool cover during the off-season, carefully remove it, making sure no debris falls into the water. Clean and dry the cover before storing it properly to prevent mold and mildew buildup.

Inspect the Pool Area

Before you start filling or treating the water, take a walk around your pool. Look for any damage to the pool deck, fencing, or surrounding area. Check for loose tiles, cracked coping, or any safety hazards that need repair.

Reconnect and Inspect Equipment

If you disconnected your pump, filter, or heater for winter, now is the time to reconnect them. Inspect all hoses, pipes, and connections for leaks or signs of wear. Make sure your filter is clean and in working condition before starting the system.

Fill the Pool to the Proper Level

Over the winter, your pool water level may have dropped. Use a hose to bring it back up to the recommended level, typically halfway up the skimmer opening.

Test and Balance the Water Chemistry

Balanced water chemistry is key to a safe and enjoyable swimming experience. Use a test kit or take a sample to your local pool store to check for:

  • pH levels (ideal range: 7.2-7.6)
  • Alkalinity (80-120 ppm)
  • Calcium hardness (200-400 ppm)
  • Chlorine or other sanitizer levels should be adjusted as necessary before moving on to the next step.

Shock the Pool

Shocking the pool helps eliminate bacteria, algae, and contaminants that may have built up over the winter. Use a chlorine shock or non-chlorine alternative based on your pool type and water condition. Allow the shock treatment to circulate for at least 24 hours before swimming.

Brush and Vacuum the Pool

Even if your pool looks clear, it likely has dirt and debris that settled over the winter. Use a pool brush to scrub the walls and floor, then vacuum any remaining debris to keep your pool spotless.

Run the Filtration System

Once everything is clean and chemically balanced, turn on your filtration system and let it run for at least 24 hours. This helps distribute the chemicals evenly and removes any lingering debris.

Check Safety Features

Ensure that all safety equipment, such as pool ladders, handrails, and safety covers, are in place and secure. If you have a pool alarm or fencing, test them to ensure they are working correctly.

Stock Up on Pool Supplies

Make sure you have enough pool chemicals, test strips, and maintenance tools for the season. Check your skimmer baskets, brushes, and nets for wear and tear and replace any broken equipment.

Enjoy Your Pool!

Once your pool is clean, balanced, and ready to go, it’s time to dive in and enjoy the warm weather! Regular maintenance throughout the season will keep your pool in great condition and ensure a summer full of fun and relaxation.

By following this checklist, you’ll have your pool up and running smoothly in no time. Happy swimming!
