For pool owners, few things are as satisfying as clear water on a summer day. To ensure that clarity remains all season long, it’s important to properly maintain and clean your pool’s filter. Effective filter maintenance is important throughout the entire pool season, but it’s especially critical to make sure your filter is working properly as peak season approaches. Whether you have a sand, cartridge or DE filter, there are important maintenance procedures you should follow and key products you can incorporate into your filter-maintenance program. Pool filter cartridges need to be cleaned when the pressure gauge rises 8 PSI above normal operating pressure. When the time frame in between this increase in pressure begins to shorten significantly, the filter cartridge probably needs to be replaced.
Pool Filter Maintenance
Follow these simple steps to ensure your pool runs smoothly:
- Empty the skimmer of debris, leaves, etc. as they will get sucked and trapped in the filter and forced back into the pool.
- Turn the pump off and empty the basket of debris.
- Ensure that the “cut-off” valve is open if necessary.
- Switch the backwash valve to “backwash” and turn on the pump. Run the pump until the water runs clear that can be seen in the sight glass.
- If the filter does not have a plunger valve, switch to “rinse” and run until water runs clear.
- Turn the pump off and switch to “filter” position.
- Turn the pump back on.
Pool Filter Life Span
Pool filter cartridges can run for about 2,000 hours in a filter pump. Usually, filter cartridges must be replaced once every 1-2 years. The filter, however, will not last as long if you enter the pool with suntan lotion, deodorants, hair-care products, and other chemicals. To know when to replace it, you should observe the filter’s condition. If the cloth looks loose, or if the cartridge looks cracked, it’s time to replace it with a new one.
