One of the most important parts of making sure your pool is in good shape is making sure the pool chemicals are balanced. If the chemicals in your pool are unbalanced, it could be potentially dangerous to your health. Here is what you need to know about pool chemicals.
pH Levels
pH is the acidity of your pool, or lack thereof. Keeping your pH levels balanced is important to ensure that people can swim comfortably and to keep your equipment in good conditions. The right pH level is around 7.4 to 7.6 when you do a test. If your pool’s pH levels are between 0 and 7, that means the pool water is acidic, while a reading from 7 to 14 means its base. If the water is too acidic, it can make the chlorine inactive. If the pH is too low, the chlorine will dissipate.
Total Alkalinity
This is the amount of alkaline that it is in the water. Alkaline and pH influence one another, so if the alkalinity of your pool is too low, the pH will be low as a result. On average, your pool’s alkalinity level should be 100 ppm (parts per million).
Calcium Hardness
It may come as a surprise that calcium is included in the list of pool chemicals, but it is very important. If calcium levels are too high, the water can become murky. If it’s too low, the pool’s surface can begin to become chalky and start to erode. This can eventually cause stains to form on the pool itself. 200 to 400 ppm is a good range for the calcium hardness.
Stabilizer
Stabilizer helps chlorine stay in the pool longer. It can also be added directly to some chlorines to help protect it from being destroyed by the harsh sun rays. If the stabilizer levels are too low, you will have to use more chlorine than usual. If it’s too high, you will have to dilute the pool water. The general stabilizer range is anywhere from 40 to 100 ppm.
