Smartphones have led to a vast revolution in the way we live our lives. Now we can create alerts for almost anything we can think of, and that includes changes in the weather. Set the alarm for when the first freezes of the season are expected. Once this has come to pass, make sure the pump is running to ensure that it won’t freeze over. You can also set alerts on computers and other mobile devices, such as tablets.
Start Winterizing Pool Accessories
The next step is to begin winterizing pool accessories. This task is much easier if you have already started to close your pool. Even so, there is still time to take care of it if you haven’t shuttered your pool yet. Winterize the deck jets, wall fountains, and any cascades or waterfall features you might have. Doing this will help protect the pumps and pipes that control their water flow against potential damages from contracting and expanding due to rapidly changing outdoor temperatures.
Open Up the Valves
Once that is addressed, take the time to open up all of the connected valves. All pools will need some water left in them, even if this seems counterintuitive at first. Spa pools are especially vulnerable to freezing, so you will need to make sure that they get enough water in circulation. Clean out all skimmers, drains, jets, returns, and vacuum lines to ensure everything is in order.

Monitor Overall Chemistry Levels
Finally, you should continue to monitor the chemistry levels of your pool. Measuring the pH, alkalinity, calcium, and acid levels will help make sure that the pool is doing okay. Doing this also helps prevent the formation of scales or hard water. When it’s time to reopen your pool in the spring, there won’t be as much to do before you can jump in again!
