Putting chlorine into your pool helps keep it clean. After a long winter, it’s almost time to reopen your pool for the warmer weather that’s on the way. If you haven’t done it yet, you will need to check how much chlorine is in your swimming pool water. Too much chlorine can be worse than not enough chlorine.
Why Are Levels Too High?
When it comes to making sure the pool water is safe, one of the methods involves the pool shock technique. However, this can also increase the amount of chlorine in the water. Alternatively, you might overload the feeder with too many chemical tablets, which can also radically increase the chlorine levels. You’ll know that the pool is over-chlorinated when you come outside to look at it and it is green instead of blue. This often happens because the pump was left on for too long while unattended. If you use cyanuric acid, it will also slow down the dissolution rate of the chemicals you use on your pool. This isn’t always a good thing, especially on a sunny day when you want to enjoy your pool.
How Do You Know It’s Too High?
It can be difficult to recognize when the chlorine is too high; this is the case even when the water looks a sickly green because everyone’s tolerance level of the chemical is different. If your family members or guests start to complain about eye irritation, skin problems, or dry hair, then it’s another sign that it’s too high. The pool will already begin to ventilate the gas, but this happens more quickly in outdoor pools than in indoor ones. At higher levels, the chlorine can start to damage swimsuits, pool covers, and make everyone in the water sick. At this point, you will have little choice but to close the pool again, leaving solar covers off in the process.
How to Reduce the Levels in Swimming Pools
Now let’s look at how you can reduce the chlorine level safely and effectively. Here are some solutions you can try:
- Chlorine neutralizer
- Vitamin C
- Hydrogen peroxide
Chlorine can also be a problem in your hot tub, so let’s see how you can remedy that situation as well.
Decreasing the Levels in Hot Tubs
- Use chlorine neutralizer or bromine neutralizer
- Drain the spa or hot tub
- Pump the drainage into an empty swimming pool or the nearest storm drain
- Try using mineral sanitizers or ozone
Armed with these pointers, you’ll be able to make the water safe and enjoyable for everyone again! Happy swimming!
