As the summer comes to an end and the brisk weather starts to emerge, it is time for pool owners to begin closing their pools for the season. Closing your pool properly helps to increase its lifespan and makes it a lot easier when it’s time to open back up next season. Here are the steps to closing your pool for the season.
Clean & Test
The first thing you want to do is give your pool a thorough cleaning since it won’t be in use for a while. Be sure to clean the water as well as the pool walls and floors as best as you can with a pool brush and vacuum. After you’ve finished cleaning the pool, you want to test the chemicals to ensure that they’re balanced.
Winterizing Chemicals
Since your pool won’t be in use for a few months, it’s a good idea to add winterizing chemicals to keep the pool clean and prevent algae growth. You first want to make sure the chlorine levels aren’t above five parts per million because it can destroy the other chemicals before they can start working. You can add algaecide to prevent algae growth. Other winterizing chemicals include metal sequestrant (if pool water has high metal levels), pool enzymes, and winterpills (slowly dissolves over time to keep pool clean).
Lower Water Level
You don’t want to completely drain your pool, but lowering the water level is important. It helps to prevent freeze damage and overflow of water. You want the water to be below the tile border. You want to check the pool’s water level if there is a lot of precipitation during the winter.
Clean the Filter & Pump
It is important to clean out your pool pump and filter because you don’t want to leave a bunch of dirt and debris sitting all winter long. Cleaning it out before you close the pool will ensure that it’ll be clean when you open it for the next season. You want to clean your cartridge filter with a filter cleaner or muriatic acid. For a sand filter, use a cleaner specifically designed for it or you can backwash it.
