When we think of the summertime, we often think of bright, sunny days. However, the humidity levels increase the chances of those major storms striking. Natural disasters and storms can be very unpredictable. With all of the money you invested into your pool, the last thing you want is a storm to sweep through and mess it up. Here are just a few steps you can take to prepare your pool for a major storm.
Put Away Loose Items
If you have outdoor furniture and accessories surrounding your pool, make sure to take these items inside before a major storm. This includes patio chairs, tables, umbrellas, and any pool toys that you have floating in the water. For any furniture items that can’t fit in the home, you want to tie them down to keep them from getting blown into the pool.
Turn off The Power
The next step is to turn off whatever is powering your pool. A major storm mixed with gas or electricity can be very dangerous. If they are calling for potential floods, it’s a good idea to unplug the pump system as well as the rest of your pool equipment and bring everything inside if possible.
Balance Pool Chemicals
Before a major storm, it’s a good idea to make sure the pool chemicals are balanced so that it’s easier to clean and balance the water after the storm. Shocking the pool may be a good idea as well to give the water an extra boost against anything the storm may bring into it.
Don’t Cover or Drain the Pool
Though this step may seem surprising, it is better to leave the pool uncovered and full of water. Covering the pool can cause major damage to the pool cover itself if any large debris fall onto it. It also makes clean up harder because it’s difficult to clean an entire pool cover. Draining the pool leaves nowhere for debris to fall, so it can cause the pool to bulge, split, or pop out of the ground.
